John Paul II in a sombrero in St. Peter's Square in 1979. Thanks to Discovery Channel and AP.

Another picture of the pope in a sombrero. This one from 20 years before the blue sombrero on the jet to Mexico. The picture was taken on April 11, 1979. In five days he would have been pope for 6 months. He was 58 at the time, turning 59 on May 18.
The sombrero (of an unknown color) had been presented to the pontiff by a member of a Mariachi band from Monterrey, Mexico’s Boy’s Town, which performed in St. Peter’s Square on April 11, 1979. The pope sure looks happy and contended. These indeed were the good ol’ early days.

John Paul II in a blue sombrero in 1999. From El Sentinel with thanks.

Picture of the then 78-year old Bl. John Paul II (#265) sporting a very dashing blue sombrero for the benefit of the press corp, on the plane, during his flight to Mexico on January 22, 1999. This was his fourth trip to Mexico, having also visited there in 1979, 1990 and 1993. He would make one other trip in 2002.
